Statement
On the exterior panels of Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights” is a scene from Genesis creation depicting the young, virginal world encased inside a crystal sphere. Perhaps this idealized portrayal is 15th century view of earth as the center of the universe.
Inspired by Bosch’s view of creation, this series is an interpretation of the first five days of Genesis – the preparation needed for the arrival of land creatures and humans on the sixth day.
Day I: Light
A supernova exploded millions of years ahead – creating all the necessary elements for earth to take shape and raining down the essential minerals for life to eventually form.
Day II: Firmament
Created on the second day is a thin atmospheric dome separating earth and heaven.
Day III: Recession
On the third day, water receded – creating a ring of ocean surrounding a singular continent. Under the new barren land, flora sprouted. By the end of the day, the foundation for light, heaven, earth, water and vegetation were established.
Day IV: Governance
Time is set with the cyclical pattern of day and night and annual seasons. This marks stability and an order for life to emerge.
Day V: Fish and Fowl
Marine life and winged fowls inhabit the sea and sky - thus creating the necessary sustenance for land creatures and humans to thrive after the sixth day.
